Appraisal Training, 50 Activities for

Media Type - Toolkit
Author - Wendy Denham and Jane Jestico

The rise in the number of appraisal systems and their improved quality in recent years has not been matched by similar changes in the field of appraisal training. The combination of these factors led the authors to produce this collection of training material suitable for use in the widest variety of organizations.

All the activities are participative, and the manual includes a range of approaches offering a choice of practical tasks, case studies, graphics, questionnaires or role plays. Some of the activities start with an explanation of the theory followed by an opportunity to practice in order to confirm participants’ understanding. Others begin with the participants completing a task which is then reviewed in order to consolidate the key learning points and principles.

By slightly changing the emphasis of the activities, the content becomes suitable for all appraisers despite different levels of experience. Most of the activities can be adapted to be run with groups of various sizes. A few of the exercises are useful for an appraiser to complete with the appraisee.

To ease selection, the activities have been categorized into two categories. The first category covers:

  • preparation
  • writing
  • the interview
  • understanding the system.

The second category covers:
  • skills including management listening questioning
  • objectivity
  • feedback
  • communication.
