How am I doing? is a programme about appraisals or performance reviews, a process which has many benefits both for organisations and the individuals who work in them. For organisations it provides focus and direction by making it clear to everyone what really matters and how their particular work contributes to the whole.
For individuals it clarifies what they are supposed to be doing, identifies the support they need to do it and gives them feedback on their successes and the areas they need to improve.
Performance review makes a major contribution to how organisations learn and develop, which is the key to success in a competitive world.
That’s if it works, but all too often it doesn’t. For those on the receiving end, performance review can be a frustrating, unhelpful and deeply demotivating experience. This frequently happens because those responsible for doing the reviewing lack both the attitude and the skills to do it properly.
They believe that performance review is a meaningless ritual imposed upon them by senior managers and the HR department. They neither prepare themselves nor give the individual being reviewed time to prepare. They attack the individual’s personality and base the review on vague opinions rather than facts. Finally, they fail to agree an action plan and follow it up.
How am I doing? will help those taking part to avoid these pitfalls and enable them to review their staff in a way which will motivate the individuals concerned and strengthen their organisation.
